Hawkins Animal Hospital & Wellness Center is not a corporate owned entity; we are a locally owned, independent veterinary clinic committed entirely to the health of the Long Island community. This independence is the core of the exceptional care we provide translating directly into superior outcomes and relationships for you and your pets.

Our Philosophy

We believe in freedom of thought. Our doctors and staff are independent thinkers, so we work solely for our patients. This means every medical decision, from diagnostics like the HT Vista screening tool, to the customized integration of Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine and conventional pharmacology, is based exclusively on what is best for your pet's unique constitution and long-term well-being.

Our Story

Our journey began in 2014 with a clear vision to create an animal hospital where cutting edge medicine and holistic wellness worked hand in hand. Founded by Bethany Howe, DVM, a veterinarian passionate about treating the whole patient - not just the symptoms - we established Hawkins Animal hospital and Wellness Center as a sanctuary for healing.

Integrative Medicine

Acupuncture

A form of Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine which includes the insertion of thin needles into vital and specific points on the body to cause a therapeutic effect. This can help aid in pain relief, the tissue healing process, regulation of gastrointestinal motility, anti-inflammatory effects and much more!

Animal Reiki & Aromatherapy

Reiki (pronounced Ray-key) is a Japanese technique that aids in stress reduction and relaxation. This technique is based on the application of Universal life force energy. Reiki balances the body’s energy, by not only treating symptoms, but by treating the body spiritually, emotionally, and physically. This is so critical in the field of veterinary medicine because so many of our patients are carrying emotional, as well as physical wounds that require healing.

Laser Therapy

Laser treatment for dogs involves a deep-penetrating light to promote a chain of chemical reactions known as photobiostimulation. This process helps relieve pain through the release of endorphins, and it stimulates injured cells to heal at an accelerated pace. During a treatment session, the handheld laser wand is slowly moved back and forth over the damaged tissue, producing a warm, pleasant sensation that most pets seem to enjoy and find relaxing.

Phovia

Phovia is an innovative way to manipulate the function of cells within the dermis and epidermis, as well as reduce inflammation but still accelerate regeneration.

It is a two-part system, comprising a LED lamp and a chromophore gel. Used together, they produce multi-wavelength fluorescent light energy that can penetrate the skin to variable depths.

Meet the Staff

Bethany Howe-Fanning, DVM, CVA

Dr. Bethany Howe received her Bachelor of Science in Zoology in 1998 from the University of Rhode Island, and graduated from the Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine in 2005. She completed a small animal internal medicine and surgery internship in Westbury, NY from 2005-2006. She then worked as an Associate Emergency Doctor in West Islip for four years, before transitioning to small animal practice over the past 4 years. She opened the Hawkins Animal Hospital and Wellness Center in August 2014 and is a member of AVMA and AVHMA. Her interests include internal and emergency triage medicine. She is also very interested in holistic medicine and is incorporating aromatherapy into her practice of traditional western medicine, and is a level 2 Reiki practitioner and seraphim blueprint practitioner. Dr. Howe makes her home on the north shore of Long Island, NY with her husband, sons, 2 dogs, and two cats.

Yvonne Boutges, DVM

Dr. Yvonne Boutges is a 2003 graduate of Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine and completed her clinical year at Oklahoma State University. After 5 years of practicing full time at a primary veterinary hospital, she decided to broaden her professional knowledge, and began practicing emergency medicine and providing veterinary relief services for Eastern Long Island. Her professional interests include preventative, behavioral and emergency medicine. Dr. Boutges was born and raised on Eastern Long Island, and currently lives on the North Fork with her husband, son, a dog named Bunker, and cats Nero and Jitterbug. She enjoys spending her down time traveling, boating and fishing with her family, and any time on the beach. Currently Dr. Boutges is available on Fridays for surgery and appointments.

Shaena -Veterinary Technician

Shaena is a Veterinary Technician at Hawkins Animal Hospital with nine years of experience in the field. She has been part of the Hawkins team for one year and has a strong interest in science. She earned her bachelor’s degree in Biology from Stony Brook University. Outside of work, Shaena enjoys watching movies, rollerskating, and riding her motorcycle.

Hi! I have been a veterinary assistant here since 2024. Animals have always been a huge part of my life, which is why I'm so happy to be working as an assistant here! When I'm not at the office, I'm at home with my two cats: Walter, who's an 11-week-old kitten with a bit of an attitude, and Nala, my sweet 8-year-old girl. I love spending my free time outdoors, exploring nature, and just soaking up the beauty of the world. You can also find me curled up with a good book or lost in my own thoughts, crafting stories.

Hi I'm Rachel, and as a Veterinary Receptionist, I'm the first person to offer a treat to a nervous pup or a comforting word to a worried owner. I love being the bridge that connects people to the care their pets need, and I find so much joy in seeing a patient leave the clinic happy and healthy. When not at work you can catch me on the nearest beach in summer or snuggling with my cats Kiwi and Cheese during those long winter months.

Hello! Im a veterinary receptionist and veterinary assistant who has always dreamed of working with animals. I’m dedicated to creating a welcoming, caring experience for every pet and their family. At home, I relax with my two cats, Ares and Kratos, often cuddling up with them while reading a book or watching a movie.

Hi, I started as a veterinary assistant in the summer of 2025. I have always been passionate about animals since I was little and I enjoy seeing them feeling their best. I have a 4-year-old red eared slider at home and I enjoy spending my free time doing art and crafts, solving puzzles, and taking photos. I strive to help every animal to the best of my ability.
